Lavelle Prep High School Hosts Intercultural Exchange for 25 High School Seniors from Chile

Through an established partnership with Abacus Educational Group and the Center for Educational Innovation’s BOOST International Initiative Team, Lavelle Prep High School students hosted twenty-five students from Chile for a day of friendship and culture sharing on Tuesday December 5th.

The goal of the visit was for the Chilean students and LP students alike to engage in an exchange with one another about the educational experience of high school students in their school. The visiting students had visited high schools in each of the five boroughs while in New York City, and were welcomed with open arms to Lavelle Prep as part of their city experience.

The day began with a student-led tour of the school and classrooms, followed by presentations, collegial discussions, and a shared pizza lunch. Within the classrooms, the visiting students were active participants and learners, and even learned to play some new instruments in through participation in LP’s music classes.

Of the visit, Lavelle Prep Principal Chris Zilinski said, “It was a wonderful experience having these students visit our students and watching them engage with one another, sharing their own unique educational experiences. Lavelle Prep seniors would not have otherwise had this opportunity, which they very much enjoyed and will stick with them for quite a while.”

As the end of the day came, students exchanged contact information and hugs, and promised to keep in touch with one another in the future. ZIlinski added, “The new perspectives and connections the students were able make during this visit are invaluable and we thank Abacus and CEI for the opportunity to host.
