Grades and Grading Policy
Lavelle Prep Elementary uses PowerSchool as our gradebook. All families will receive a login and password. You will be able to view your child’s grades as they are entered.
Lavelle Prep Elementary uses a proprietary grading system. On the report card you will see four grades, GLP, HOWL, I & E and their Final grade. Each category is explained below:
Grade Level Proficiency is measured on a scale of 0-100 and is an indicator of how your child is progressing on grade level standards. A high grade is a sign of meeting grade level standards, a lower grade is an indicator of below grade level performance.
HOWL (Habits Of Work and Learning) is measured on a scale of 0-100 and is an indicator of how well your child works in the academic environment. This area includes homework, classwork/group work and participation. A higher grade is an indicator of excellent work ethic and citizenship, a lower grade is an indicator of struggling habits.
Interventions and Enrichment is measured on a scale of 0-100 and is an indicator of student assessments that were given below or above grade level. Often students are not ready for grade level work, so our team tailors the instruction to meet students where they are. This does mean that a higher grade does not always show that a student is meeting promotional criteria. The Grade Level Proficiency grade is a better indicator of that measurement. Students that are meeting proficiency on grade level will be given opportunities for enrichment activities to further their thinking and learning.
Final Grade is measured on a 0-100 scale and is composed of three items, the Grade Level Proficiency grade (50% of final grade), the HOWL grade (20%of final grade), and Interventions and Enrichment (30% of final grade) assessments that were given below or above grade level.

Communication
We utilize a communication program called ParentSquare. Parent email addresses and phone numbers are automatically transferred from our student information system from registration, so there is no need to download anything. However, if you would like, there is an app available for download. We use this program to private message parents about student progress, send whole school communications, emergency communications, our weekly newsletter, and much more!
We also utilize Class Dojo. Your child’s teacher will be sending home additional information at the start of the school year to connect to your classroom! This is a free messaging app that allows for ongoing communication.
Technology
Each student will be issued a chromebook for usage during the school day and will remain in the school building. Students are wholly responsible for their computer which includes appropriate usage and damage.
