Full Circle: From Student to Teacher

One of our greatest achievements here at Integration Charter Schools is following up with our former students, and seeing where their futures have led.

For one former Lavelle Prep student, Demie Medley, we don’t have to look too far — as she is now in her first year of teaching at Lavelle Prep Elementary.

Upon graduating from high school Demie earned her bachelor’s degree with a concentration in theatre and dance from Hunter College in January 2020. Today, we are so proud to have her on our team teaching third-grade.

Though Demie didn’t always plan on pursuing a career in education, she decided to follow in the footsteps of her mother, recalling a feeling of inspiration during a visit to her mother’s classroom. Seeing the impact her mother has on the lives of children as a teacher made her want to become one herself.

Once she determined her calling, returning to work  at Lavelle Prep only felt natural to her.

“I was already familiar with the teachers and the way the school operates,” she says. “My time at Lavelle has influenced my life in many ways. Being able to give back to the community that gave so much to me is an amazing opportunity.”

One of the most pertinent lessons Demie learned during her time at Lavelle, and has now carried throughout her life, is that hard work pays off.

She fondly recalls her former Lavelle Prep teachers, Mrs. Roman and Mrs. Peterford specifically, whom she refers to as her mentors during her time as a  Lavelle Prep student. “They taught me to  have the confidence and leadership needed in both my personal and professional life,” she says.

Demie’s students’ kindness and enthusiasm for learning make her job worthwhile.

She is also grateful for the support of her instructional family at Lavelle Prep Elementary, including Ms. Sinodinos and Mrs. Bruschi whose mentorship and help has been sincerely appreciated in her first year as a teacher.

We loved having you as part of our student family, and to now have you as part of our staff family, Demie! We can’t wait to see what the future holds for you, and your students.
