Dear Students and Families:
We are reaching out today to share information about the educational plan we are putting in place to keep the learning going while school is closed due to Coronavirus. As we move to a distance learning model, we will continue to provide supports and Specially Designed Instruction for all students including our students with disabilities and 504s to the greatest extent possible. We will be accomplishing this by having students and teachers use “Google Hangouts.” This program can be easily accessed by students using the Google Classroom program they use on a regular basis. Teachers will send a “Google Hangout” calendar invite to their students prior to the start of the class. Students simply click on the link and they will be in the class.
On Thursday and Friday (if needed) teachers will do an introductory session to distance learning and layout the norms and expectations for the Virtual classroom. You are all invited to join these sessions with your child.
On Monday, all Regents and College Leveled Courses will have live streaming sessions with pure instruction in addition to Google Classroom Assignments.
Each student will need access to a computer or Chromebook with Internet access for use throughout the day. If your child does not have access to a device at home, please email me at the school to let me know and we will make arrangements to loan your child a device. Devices may be picked up from our school on Tuesday, March 17 or Wednesday, March 18th from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. A parent or guardian must be present to sign our technology contract!
How to support your child with distance learning:
Each student will have virtual access to online material. Please remind students to promptly join each class at the start of the period following the schedule attached. Remind students not to chat or video conference with other students during classes. Remind students to turn in their work by 11:59 pm on the date it was assigned unless it is a hard copy or long term project. If so, students should email their teacher(s) their work. Troubleshoot any technology issues with students. Remind students that if their technology isn’t working and they miss the live mini-lesson, they should still do the assignment posted in Google Classroom. Refer to this presentation for any tips about how to use Google Hangout.
Communication during distance learning:
If your child is sick and not capable of joining lessons, please email your child’s teachers to let them know that your child is sick and may not be completing work that day. Please ensure that your child makes up any missed work.
If your child is having technology issues, you or your child should reach out to our Tech Department. The contact information can be found on our website. Please do not reach out directly to teachers with technology issues. Teachers will give students feedback on all of their work on a daily basis. If you or your child has a question about an assignment, you may reach out directly to that teacher via email and expect an answer in a timely fashion.
Agenda for each class:
Each class begins with a 5-15 minute live teacher presentation. Following the teacher presentation, students will engage in independent work. Students will be responsible for independent work and tasks. Students must virtually “turn in” their independent work by 11:59 each day, or by the end of the class session. All students have a 5-minute break before the next class. Teachers will provide feedback to each student individually on their assignment within 24 hours. You will follow your daily schedule, based on the times of the schedule below, but attend only Core Classes.
Wellness, Electives, Arts, and Movement classes will be independent study only. In those classes, your teacher(s) will communicate expectations and assignments through Google Classroom.
The following is the schedule.
|Period 1||9:00 – 9:30|
|Period 2||9:35 – 10:05|
|Period 3||10:10 – 10:40|
|Period 4||10:45 – 11:15|
|Period 5||11:20 – 11:50|
|Period 6||11:55 – 12:25|
|Period 7||12:30 – 1:00|
We will be providing students an introduction and training during Thursday’s and Friday’s sessions. We also encourage you to read through the Google presentation so that you have seen the information and are prepared to help your child.
During this stressful and uncertain time, the ICS counseling department will be available to all students and families for any immediate needs, questions and concerns from 8 am to 4 pm daily, Monday through Friday.
In the event of a crisis or mental health concern with your child, you can reach out to your designated grade counselor during the hours listed above. If your child is experiencing any high-risk behaviors or is a danger to themselves or others, please call 911 or go directly to your nearest emergency room.
In addition, our school counselors will be contacting those families whose children have been receiving on-going counseling services to set up remote sessions. If you haven’t been contacted and feel you have a need, please reach out to your grade counselor to set up services.
Grade counselor and staff contact information is available on our website.
We thank you for your partnership as we launch this plan. We encourage you to read through the presentation to deeply understand how our distance learning will work.
Stay safe, stay healthy, and know that we are here for you. Please reach out with your questions and concerns.
